Integrating old and new
In their design process, the DAT looked at the possibility of preserving the 1924 portion of the building and considered it in the context of other priorities including the building’s ability to meet its educational priority, efficient site utilization, sustainability (LEED), safety/accessibility, and schedule and cost effectiveness. The team considered three different options: 1) preserving and adapting the 1924 building and adding onto it, 2) preserving just the west and south facades of the 1924 building and integrating them into the new construction; and 3) demolishing the existing building and starting with a clean slate. Last week, the design advisory team came to a strong consensus decision to proceed with option 2, preserving the west and south facades.

Going Green
Thanks to a generous financial contribution from the City of Boulder, we will be able to make the new Casey a high performance building in terms of energy efficiency and resource conservation. We are pursuing the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold certification. LEED is the industry-recognized, voluntary rating system that defines high-performing green buildings.
